Writer’s note: I’m from Winnipeg. I moved here when I was six years old and “being from Winnipeg” happened to me pretty much immediately. I’ve lived somewhere else for eight years, and I will always be from Winnipeg. The Fringe epitomizes what Winnipeg is and can be. I get to see everyone I’ve ever known all in one place and talk about whatever show we just sat through (edge of our seats or slumped over) and feel like one big beating heart of a community.
House of Gold and its resultant The Musical are love letters to bits, to hijinks, to Johnny Cash, to Scooby Doo, to my friends and family, and to the idea that art has to come from somewhere real to be effective and meaningful. I love Winnipeg and its theatre community with all my heart, and I hope you enjoy the show.
